Historical Data Entry

Thalian Hall is seeking persons with good typing skills to help us create a database of daily events throughout the history of Thalian Hall.

Prior to the advent of the personal computer, a team of archives volunteers painstakingly perused the New Hanover County Library's microfiche collection of 19th and early 20th century newspapers such as the Star, Messenger and Dispatch, as well as records of the Wilmington Board of Aldermen. They created a card file that is a priceless and fascinating glimpse into the everyday operation of Thalian Hall, and its place in the lives of the citizens and government of Wilmington.

We are now creating a database that will, for the first time, allow the public to search for events on particular dates in Thalian Hall's history via this website. This database will also be the "engine" that will power a new feature of our website: "On This Date" which will list daily the events that occurred on that calendar date in Thalian Hall! For example, if you visit this site on March 15, 2009, "On This Date" will list events that might have occurred on March 15 of 1868, 1897, 1923 et cetera! We envision people looking up such things as their own birth dates, important historical dates and more.

Volunteers who assist in this project earn points toward the Usher Corps "Top 40" incentive program.
